Altmünster
Likely the oldest settlement on the Lake Traunsee, Altmuenster is today an extensive market town, which stretches from the banks of the Traunsee to the Hoellengebirge mountain chain.
Visible for miles around, the Romanesque tower of the Pfarrkirche serves as Altmuenster's "landmark." It is speculated that this is the legendary Benedictine convent "Trunseo." In any case, the Pfarrkirche and its unique atmosphere are - especially during Christmas time - worth a visit. The baroque nativity set made by Johann Georg Schwanthaler is regarded as the mother of all nativity sets in the Salzkammergut and belongs to Austria's most important nativity sets.
